Make Up Shelf Life

You know that gloopy mascara you keep running under the hot tap to make it not so gloopy? Toss it in the bin girl! Yes its time, chances are it was time 6months ago. Here’s the thing, you probably spent a ton of cash on that lip gloss and you have decided to ignore the funny smell that started a while ago. Expiration dates are not designed to make you shell out tons of cash over and over again but to also keep you from harming yourself. For instance, after a foundation with SPF expires, the sun protection is not as effective. You might end up ruining your skin after prolonged use and exposure to UV rays.

According to Dr Hadley King a dermatologist, "All of the molecules in these products can break down into something else, and you can have a reaction to it." This reaction could lead to contact dermatitis, and this inflammation of this skin can lead to a rash, blisters or swelling of skin.

The thing is, the moment you expose your makeup to air, it is vulnerable to bacteria. That pink eye you had last week was probably from your 6-month old mascara. Don't worry. It doesn't happen overnight, but just know that every time you pump your mascara wand you are pushing bacteria filled air into the tube and then picking it up the next day and brushing these bacteria through your lashes. Disgusting isn’t it? All types of makeup have a natural resistance to bacteria, however, just like us, the resistance fades with age.

Most products have a Period After Opening (PAO) symbol that tells you how long you should keep a product after you’ve opened it. The symbol includes the letter 'm' which stands for month and a number before the letter 'm' (which stands for the amount of months), i.e. '6m' means that once you've opened a product you should realistically stop using this product after six months. If there is no POA you can use the below table as a general guide.
